Walter and Mary Beth Sansing returned to West Blocton, Alabama, eighteen years ago and immediately became involved in local organizations they felt could benefit the area economically, educationally and environmentally. Following their graduation from West Blocton High School, they entered the University of Alabama to further their education. Walter received a football scholarship and was initiated into the Alabama A-Club. Associations in the field of athletics led to his career in athletic equipment sales and the establishment of Sansing Sporting Goods in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where they resided for over thirty-five years. Mary Beth pursued and earned BS and MS degrees in Secondary Education.

Community involvement since returning to West Blocton began with membership in the Bibb County Citizens for Wildflowers of which they are now board members. Both Walter and Mary Beth are Charter and Lifetime members of Friends of the Cahaba National Wildlife Refuge where Mary Beth has held the office of Secretary and both are currently board members. They are members of the Nature Conservancy and are members of the West Blocton Improvement Committee. Mary Beth is a member of the Coke Ovens Park Board, a past member of the Bibb County Education Foundation and a member of the Bibb County Education Retirees Association. Walter is an Associate Member of the Cahaba River Authority of Bibb County of which he served as Chairman for a number of years. For seven years Walter was a board member of the Cahaba River Society and was the recipient of their Conservationist of the Year award. Walter is the current President of the West Blocton Old Timers Association which sponsors an annual ball game, fish fry, and fireworks display. Walter was elected to represent District 1 on the Bibb County Commission and worked diligently to ensure that wildflowers along the roadsides in his district were protected.
